Well friends another year is almost gone and my political apathy has increased much more as you may tell by the lack of posts. I have spent the last year soul searching as far as politics has gone and the change I had hoped for in government is well....non-existent.
I have to admit I enjoy shit disturbing and one line cracks on twitter but I try to keep it lighthearted. I have been called every name in the book, and honestly I don't mind it at all. I enjoy the debate. It is no secret I supported the Wildrose Party, but what many did not stop to notice is I carried only a PC membership for quite some time. I have many friends in the PC party and some of them are elected MLA's. I also have made many friends in the Wildrose party including MLA's, not stopping there took the time to meet and talk with David Swann of the Liberals. I admit I have not met the MLA's for the NDP, but I have tried.
Where am I on the political spectrum, well I say to the right but who knows. I feel that strong oppostion is essential to our democracy with every party offering up some good points. I have very high regards for the NDP and feel when it comes to social issues they are second to none. Rachel Notley is a fierce advocate in the Legislature for social rights, and yes they are indeed important in creating balance in the house. The Liberals could have taken on a more important role, but with their lack of research and one track mind they have been failing us as an official opposition. The Wildrose and the PC parties have very similar policies. In my opinion the difference is the PC party has become stale and complacent, their only concern being to stay in power and forgetting about those who placed them there. So here I am, having to decide with a looming election where I will place my loyalties this time. With the election of a new Premier, can the PC party come around for Alberta?
Well as I see it the answer is no. I have watched the new Premier come in and though she may not be the old boys club, she is still the same old thing. Campaign promises not being adhered to, twisting what she promised to accommodate the party brass again. I watch her forcing legislation through, without listening to any opposing views. She in fact completely dismisses them and pushes on, pumping through 7 new bills in 2 weeks. Claiming she is listening to Albertans, when the only ones she has had time with are those able to afford and attend her expensive fundraisers. Albertans? Yes, but only of a certain class and political view. I have been questioning many of the new bills as a PC and I have been told by my friends, MLA's and executives in the PC party I am a blind Wildrose partisan. Hmmm...is that what it means to question and hold the governing party to account on bad decisions? Change indeed. If you have to be a member of an opposing party to simply debate the bad decisions a PC government may be making, so be it. Today I have decided to take out a Wildrose membership once again. It has become apparent if you do not go with the flow in the "NEW" PC Party you are not accepted, and me well I will not accept this style of governing.
Those friends, MLA's, and party brass that think I am some anonymous blogger with no trust factor. Well since Jason Markusoff of the Calgary Herald says my trust factor would go up by 30x times by not being anonymous, maybe I will test the theory. My name is Derrick Jacobson, not anonymous hack. Do you believe me now??

You had my trust and respect both before and now, Derrick. Your ability to see and accept grey area while others can see only black & white, puts you into what is an increasingly smaller group, sad to say, but the only group to which I give any credence. Your serious but light-hearted way of debating is Twitter at its best. Whatever party you choose to support, don't ever change your style, my friend.
ReplyDeleteAbout time DJ. Now I can call you by your actually name in the Politweet Flames box. Welcome to the maskless, political community!
ReplyDeleteGreat post Derrick! Your tweets and posts add greatly to the debate. I respect the hell out of you. Keep it up!
ReplyDeleteWell, I knew you and followed the blog, and never put the two together. Makes a lot of sense now -- good blog, and good observations in person.
ReplyDeleteBah - blogging's a dead medium anyway. ;)
ReplyDeleteIn all seriousness, though - I continue to respect you for all the reasons listed above, and have since we first met at Schanks several years ago. You've got a keen mind for policy and a rare grasp of the importance of nuance - including the fact that change can happen without being immediate or revolutionary.
On your analysis of my own party, I certainly hope this is one of the rare instances where you're flat-out wrong. Because if raising a questioning voice or expecting leaders from all parties - including my own - to be accountable for mistakes is a quick ticket to political purgatory, I'm in for a VERY long Spring... ;)

Enjoyed the read, it's good to see that people are starting to realize that maybe the PC's haven't been doing a good a job as our economy suggests. I also appreciate the positive not for ABNDP social services (especially as your local NDP candidate) my concern with the WRP is their mindset towards private healthcare and views on climate change. I think they are suggesting some good ideas and are doing a great job of helping people realize that maybe Albertans have been getting the short straw over the years. My email is nathansalmon@albertandp.ca , I'm new to politics but if you've got time would like to hear more of your thoughts as I believe I'm in this political mess for the right reasons and part of that means hearing educated opinions on things I likely disagree with. Again great read - Nathan Salmon
