In a surprising move the Federal Government banned the Burka and Niqab while taking the oath for Canadian citizenship.
I am not so sure I would call it bizarre like Jason Kenney, but surprising definitely. I am sure that someone will play the racism card on me, but here is the way I see it. How can you possibly confirm the identity of someone you are making a citizen when their face is covered? How can you be sure they are even swearing in if you can't see them. Many people say it doesn't matter, but it does simply because it is upheld equally. We are a country of diversity, but we also have laws, rules, and tradition here. I for one am tired of catering to group after group when it comes down to these things. We are not archaic for enforcing things equally are we? Where does it end? We changed traditional clothing of the RCMP for special interest group. We allow for the kirpan and yet for every one else it is considered a concealed weapon. We are told happy holidays should replace Merry Christmas to be politically correct. I say enough. Where does this stop and let common sense come in? Drivers license was also an issue not long ago because having a photo on it went against a groups belief. Helmet laws shouldn't apply if you wear a turban.
Lets try and keep things simple, if you want to be a part of Canadian society then be a part of it. If you are so set on changing things to meet your country of origin, then stay where it is accepted. I believe we are a very accepting nation, but we can't continually change rules and tradition to accommodate special interests.
Here is an article by Paula Simons of the Edmonton Journal. The other view by Licia Corbella of the Calgary Herald.
I have stated my personal point of view, what do you think of all this?
