It's been a while since I have written anything in the blog, but the misinformation that Corporate Ethics has been throwing around with their Rethink Alberta Campaign has me miffed.
Although I do not think that this campaign will have anything outside of a positive effect on our tourism industry, the people they are trying to impact are the wrong ones. Alberta's oilsands are operated on a supply and demand basis in the free market, and guess what-the United States is the largest consumer of this oil. I would never be so blind as to say we can't do better, but I also am not so blind that I don't see we are doing better on the environmental side. If this campaign wanted to target the oilsands production they would try to boycott the oil and not the tourism industry. What is also odd to me is the areas they are targeting with this billboard campaign, as most people in these areas couldn't tell you where Alberta is let alone boycott it.
This is where I think the propaganda campaign is actually going to help Alberta and it's tourism industry. Most people who have never heard of us will also google Alberta, and see the natural beauty this province has. Places like:
Castle Falls , Elbow Falls, Kananaskis, and Banff to name just a few of the hundreds of places Alberta has to offer.
Much of the comments I have read seem to pit Americans against Canadians which is ridiculous. It is not the Americans or San Fransisco that are spewing this propaganda, rather a few of the environmentalist groups based there. If anything I feel sorry for the people that buy into their B.S. and miss out on a chance to see Alberta's natural beauty.
